How to Set Intentions for 2017

January is one of my favorite times of the year. It is a chance to reflect on the previous year and to set intentions for the upcoming one. I choose to set intentions instead of set goals for myself. Setting an intention is similar to setting a goal, but you don't get caught up in trying to control the process.

An intention is a desire that comes from your heart. All you need to do is simply state your intention and surrender it to the Universe. Everything that happens to us begins with an intention. What we manifest begins with what we put energy into. What we focus on, we will create. It is that simple.

What you intend becomes your reality. Where your intention goes, you go.
— Gary Zukav, Seat of the Soul

Trust that if your desire is align with your higher good, the Universe will align the right people and experiences to bring your desires to you. Trust that it will happen when the time is right and it will.

How I set my Intentions.

1. Sit in a quiet and relaxing space. I love to light candles and have tea.

2. Write down a list of what you want more of in your life and what your heart really desires. What in life sets you on fire creatively or brings you the most joy? It can be taking more time for yourself, a new business venture, working on relationships, etc.

My list included growing my business, being the healthiest version of me I can be for myself and others, improving finances by paying off any debt and saving money (I really want a new house!) and releasing any fear holding me back,

3. After you have made the list, write it out in detail. What would it look like, what would it feel like to experience the desire? Feel the joy and the gratitude as though you have achieved it.

After I made my intention list, I created a mind map of what I could do to make my intentions a reality.

4. Make a vision board. Cut out pictures that represent your intentions/desires. Place the vision board where you will see it often.

I have my vision board on the back of my bathroom door. This allows me time to look at it daily while getting ready in the morning.

6. Revisit your intentions as often as you want. Ask yourself if you are living each day as though the intention was manifested. What steps can you take each day to bring you closer to your desire? Visualize it, feel the joy and gratitude daily as though you have already achieved it.

5. Release control, surrender the outcome and enjoy the journey!

This is how the Universe works.

I recently told you about letting go of my fears to make room for incredible changes to take place in my life. What I didn't tell you was the whole story.

Almost a year ago, I made a list of what a dream job would be for me. I have always known that I want to work for myself, but needed a part time job to help bring in extra income. The most important requirement was that it had to support this new path I was on and be part of something positive. I prayed on this position and kept the paper in my journal to remind me of what I was looking for.

Fast forward a year later and I felt frustrated things weren't happening. I had created my dream business in my head, done all the necessary training, prayed about it and had gratitude towards it. I was doing everything I thought I needed to be doing to manifest my business. The one thing I was lacking was surrendering and releasing the fear.

Knowing that fear was part of the problem, it was recommended I make a list of everything in my life that fear was holding me back from. My list included:

1. Starting my own business- The underlying fears were fear of failure, fear of embarrassment, fear of what others would think, fear of money, fear of not having an office space.

2. Leaving a job I had been unhappy at for so long- underlying fears were guilt of letting others down, fear of change, fear of the unknown.

After reading the list, I became angry that I let my fears stop me from creating an amazing life for myself. I was also angry that some of the root fears were based on what others thought of me. I was done with the fear. For the first time, I really realized what it meant to surrender. This fear was not going to control my life and I was tired of trying to control each aspect of how I thought it was going to happen. I began praying to be shown what my next step was.

Almost one week after letting go of the fear, I was offered a space to practice my Reiki. I didn't know how it was going to work with a full time job, but I didn't need to know. I accepted the offer and then prayed to be shown what was next.

One day later, a part time job at a spiritual church/center came open with some of the exact duties I included in my part time job list. The most important part was that it supported this new journey. As I began researching this center, it talked about things I was interested in such as the books "A Course in Miracles" and "Power of Now", meditation, yoga and other topics. I knew this was the job I was supposed to apply for.

I had a sense of peace during the interview process because it felt so right. But, I did understand that if it wasn't meant to be, there would be something even greater coming.

I was eventually offered the job and quit my full-time corporate job. I still have some fear about money but I trust that will be taken care of because I am where I was led to be.

Once I was able to let go of the fear, incredible doors started opening up for me. Those doors were already created in my mind but now they were able to come to life. When we surrender, let go of control and allow the Universe to lead, we make room in our life for miracles.

Letting go of the fear

It took me almost one year to stand in my own power and face my fears. I started this business about a year ago after realizing my purpose was to help people. My fear kept me from even seeing clients. However tough it was, I still maintained a strong desire to push forward. I could feel the desire to help others in every cell of my body. I pressed on learning, studying and training under an amazing teacher. I knew I had to face the fear if I wanted to make my dream a reality.

I made a list of everything in my life that fear holds me back from. The fear of failure, of embarrassment, of judgement and what others thought of me were the patterns in each area that I was held back in. I made a conscious decision to face the fear and overcome it. In that moment of meeting fear head on and announcing that it was no longer going to control me, the universe set the ball in motion.

That next week, I was offered a space to practice and had my first three clients booked. Those feelings of being uncomfortable facing the fears are worth every moment of helping another human.

There comes a point in our lives when we must choose the path we want to take. The path of fear or the path of light and love. By honoring the path of love, we open ourselves to a world of possibilities beyond our wildest imaginations.

I encourage you to look deep at your own life, make a list and call out your greatest fears. Look at fear for what it is, your own ego, and rise above it. In your choice to rise above your fear, will come great transformation and growth.

How Reiki Helped Change My Life

Everything is made up of energy including our thoughts, our bodies and the world around us. Many times, stress, poor eating, our environment and negative thoughts affect our energy leaving us depleted or ill. Reiki, a Japanese technique, helps balance this energy. It helps to restore the mind, body and soul creating harmony of the whole person.

When I was first introduced to reiki I was unsure of what it would help me with. I was going through a very hard time in life and was looking for anything that would promote happiness and a change.

My first experience was very relaxing. I laid on a table, with dimmed lights, and my reiki master placed her hands on certain areas of my body (major chakras) while connecting to the life force that is within all of us. I felt warm and at peace. I decided to continue once or twice per month to promote well-being.

At first, I didn’t think much was happening besides a reduction in stress. It wasn’t until I looked back on my progress a few months later that I saw the miracles occurring around me.

My marriage was somehow improving. In fact, it was better than it ever was. We were able to break out of a cycle and starting to see each other with new and grateful eyes. As I began to change, it created a ripple effect and he began to see me in the same light. The stress of work, kids and life swirled around us but stopped affecting who we were as a couple.

In addition to my marriage, my anxiety decreased to the point I was able to go off my medication. I then began to become interested in my physical health because I knew it was important to my happiness and growth. I started reading about clean eating and exercise. I lost 30 pounds in the process.

Friendships were improving and ones that were unhealthy started to fade away. I was surrounding myself with positive people who were supportive instead of negative people bringing me down.

I noticed my intuition increasing and a greater connection to God. As a young girl, I had many experiences happen that frightened me such as seeing balls of light in my room. I shut down this gift and it wasn’t until I began to reconnect with myself and my abilities that I started opening up again. This is the biggest blessing I have been given from the reiki. I feel like my true self again.

I started to feel happier than I ever felt in my life. My negative thought patterns were being replaced with loving, grateful and joyous thoughts. My stress and anxiety were decreasing. My physical body is the healthiest it has ever been. My spirituality is the strongest it has ever been. Fear was beginning to be replaced with love. Every aspect of my being was being re-balanced.

I found my purpose in life. I received my master level training in March.

The importance of this holistic healing modality is becoming more prevalent in hospitals as they are beginning to use practitioners to help with their treatments of cancers, pregnancies, chronic illnesses, injuries, heart attacks, respiratory problems and healing after surgeries.

My hope is that more people will learn about reiki and try it out. When you feel good and start to see the joy around you, life can be pretty amazing!

How I lost 30 pounds in 2 months

I wish I had a before and after picture to show my progress. The truth is, I can't find one picture of myself at my heaviest. I tossed every picture that I had. I didn't want to go anywhere or do anything. I was consumed with how I thought others saw me and how I saw myself.

My weight gain started in 2001 after going on Paxil for anxiety. In a period of a few months I gained almost 50 pounds. I went from a size 4 to a size 12. Even after switching anxiety medication, it was a constant struggle trying to keep weight off. I eventually dropped 20 pounds and have kept that off for 15 years.

Everything I read indicated diet and exercise play a big part in mental and physical health.  I knew in order to be healthy I had to start with what I put into my body. I wanted a change that would last. Within two months of a lifestyle change, I dropped the remaining 30 pounds. I felt incredibly empowered, self-confident and free.

How I lost the weight:

1. I downloaded the My Fitness Pal app on my phone to track EVERYTHING I ate.

2. Exercised five times per week for about 20-30 minutes. This included riding my stationary bike and light weight resistance training. Exercise also has been shown to increase serotonin production which I feel helped with my withdrawals.

3. Limited my calorie intake to 1200 while I was in the weight loss period. I now have increased this amount to maintain my weight.

4. Watched my sugar intake. Absolutely no cookies, cakes, ice cream, candy, muffins or donuts! I did eat a lot of fruit daily.

4. I began eating more vegetables. I learned that I actually love asparagus! Lettuce is low in calories so I ate a lot of salads! And, learned to like it without dressing.

5. Increased my protein intake by adding more chicken, eggs, nuts and tuna.

6. I did eat bread and pasta but in small portions sizes and only whole wheat. I also ate a lot of rolled oats, flaxseed meal and chia seeds.

Other changes to my diet that I don't think contributed to my weight loss, but helped to become healthier include eating organic fruits and vegetables when I can, eating cage-free or organic eggs, staying away from corn, and eating antibiotic free meat.

I hope this helps anyone who is interested in losing some of the extra weight or who is looking to become more mindful of what is put into the body. I would recommend talking to your doctor regarding any lifestyle change that affects your health.
